In 1998, the IBM display group demonstrated a 16.3″ diagonal QSXGA (Quad SXGA) direct view TFT-LCD with the highest information content ever shown [17]. The panel has 2560 × 3 columns and 2048 rows and the subpixel size is 42 μm (h) × 126 μm (v) which is equivalent to a full color resolution of 200 ppi (pixel per inch). In this panel, the conventional single domain twisted nematic (TN) liquid crystal mode was adopted, i.e. no wide viewing angle technology was implemented. In this paper, we demonstrated that the ridge and fringe field technology [18] can be implemented in this high resolution liquid crystal display to achieve wide viewing angle capability. © 2001 Elsevier Science B.V.
