A variational method for multichannel scattering

A multichannel variational method is proposed that allows use of basis functions extending to infinity, not truncated at a finite boundary, although the method uses R-matrix formalism. Exact asymptotic wavefunctions are used as a continuum basis. Two-channel model calculations demonstrate the validity of the method.
