We show that screw dislocations can be stabilized in a Lennard-Jones amorphous solid. Both the energy and the Eshel by twist are in accord with continuum theory. As in a crystal there is a threshold of the initial displacement vector above which a jump in the final displacement (Burgers) vector is observed. However, unlike a crystal, the motion of a screw dislocation or shear displacement exceeding approximately 0.8 of an atom diameter results in changes in density of the material. © 1982 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
