Two exactly soluble models for the hot-electron problem are introduced. The models are used to illustrate and gain insight into various approaches to the time-dependent and steady-state problems and to the perturbation theory from a known steady state. For one of the models it is shown that the optimum choice for a generalized self-scattering rate violates Rees's condition (that the self-scattering rate be positive) everywhere. © 1971 The American Physical Society.
