The plasmon-photon modes of a filamentary square lattice are calculated by using a phenomenological single-strand Lagrangian for the plasmon polarization field. We solve for the case of instantaneous (Coulomb) interactions between polarization waves on the strands and are able to treat retarded interactions between filaments for the first time. The contribution of these modes via their zero-point energy to the cohesive energy of quasi-one-dimensional conductors is calculated numerically and shown to be small. © 1984 The American Physical Society.
