Single-crystal growth techniques are discussed in terms of their dependence on phase equilibrium, thermal stability of the desired compound, and considerations of the vapor species during the crystallization process. Ferrites, orthoferrites, garnets, chalcogenide spinels, and europium chalcogenide systems are used to illustrate some of the special problems in crystal growth. © 1970 The American Institute of Physics.
