This correspondence investigates some methods for improving the performance of single-stage shuffle-exchange networks (SSN‘s) in a packet communication environment where the modules in a computer system communicate by sending fixed size packets. The three new switching strategies proposed use extra buffers to enhance performance, while preventing deadlocks. An intuitive criterion for determining the applicability of approximate analysis techniques is discussed. Copyright © 1985 by The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc.
