Recently, we introduced the "generalized Slater-Pauling" construction, in which the magnetization of most transition-metal alloys fall near a universal and easily interpreted straight line. The construction is based on the idea that, in transition-metal alloys, the solute d states lies either close (in energy) to the host d states, and join them in forming a "common band," or they lie well above the host d states, forming a "split-band" configuration. While most alloys are either split- or common-band in character, we focus here on the exceptions, those that exhibit the transition from split- to common-band behavior. These include the alloy series Ru-Rh-Pd and Os-Ir-Pt as solutes in ferromagnetic Co and Ni.
